Wood Staining demonstrates Finishing by Beck Painting

Eugene Oregon is the birthplace of Beck Painting Inc. Beck Painting’s owner Abel Beck was born at the old Sacred Heart Hospital near the University of Oregon. As a teenager attending South Eugene High School Abel would often spend his weekends painting houses in the Eugene and Springfield area with his dad. These days Abel can point out numerous houses he’s painted in every neighborhood of Eugene. From the Ferry Street Bridge area out to Barger, Whitaker to Hendrix Park, and Gilham to Spring Boulevard.

Beck Painting Inc was hired to do all of the painting in this custom home East of Eugene Oregon. A major part of the job was the Alder Woodwork that needed to be stained and sealed. In this post we will share with you our process for staining woodwork.

Wood Staining for Alder Woodwork

The first thing we do is fill all of the nail holes with a stainable wood filler.  As soon as the wood filler was dry, we sand the woodwork thoroughly.  Here is a close up of the woodwork after being sanded. While sanding the filler flat we also sand to eliminate imperfections in the wood as well as to promote adhesion of subsequent coatings.

Once everything is sanded, we apply the stain. In this case we used a spray stain. Spray stain allows us to achieve a very uniform appearance.

When the clear coats are finished, we mask off the woodwork before priming the walls.

Here we are applying primer to the walls using an airless sprayer.

We start the walls by priming the stain over-spray with an oil-based primer to ensure the bond between coatings. Then we prime the walls and ceilings entirely.

After two coats of wall paint, we unmasked the woodwork.
